A former Coral Springs Police officer has been sentenced to 14-and-a-half months in state prison after pleading guilty to two counts of using a computer to sexually exploit a child, court records show.
Steven Daniello, 64, who was arrested in January 2021, will also serve nearly four years of probation after completing his prison term, according to documents filed in Broward County Circuit Court.
As part of his sentence, issued Jan. 4, Daniello will register as a sex offender, forfeit his law enforcement officer certification, pay $10,680 in restitution, and stay away from the 15-year-old female victim, according to the records.
Daniello, whose most recent job with Coral Springs Police was a school resource officer position at Westchester Elementary School, was fired after his arrest. He had been with the department since 2017 and previously worked on the Coconut Creek Police force.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, investigators said he offered to pay the teen victim for nude photos of herself and discussed her performing sexual acts for him.
Wow, it is so refreshing to see how someone who abuses his authority as a “school resource officer position at Westchester Elementary School” is held to a higher standard of accountability than the rest of us mortals and sentenced to 14 and a half YEARS in prison. My faith in the system of law is…
No, wait, let me read that again.
For abusing this teen, he gets 14 and a half MONTHS!
I could be outraged at how cops and others in authority are treated in a completely different way than ordinary people who commit the same crimes.
Ok, I admit I am outraged.
BUT Arrogant Unrepentant Daniello will find that it is being on the registry for life is the real loing-term punishment he will have to endure.
WOW. Regular citizens who solicit fake (non-existent) “victims” [entrapment stings] online probably get more time.
“…and that government of the
peopleCOPS, by thepeopleCOPS, for thepeopleCOPS, shall not perish from the earth.”It never ends…
You don’t have to be a cop to get a light sentence. Folks, just stop and chew on that for a moment before throwing this into a debate about fairness. (And for the record, I do not think overall that it’s a light sentence. Short time for sure, but registry for life.)
Something I’d like to see debated is whether or not the registry itself plays a role in the adjudication of sex offenses, where length of incarceration is determined. Those of us that have been inside have probably heard the adage that they ‘let out the ones who will be the first to return.’ In fishing, it’s called “catch and release.” Cops love that sport. They’re not so fond of babysitting.
What I’m saying is that it’s not just cops who can get lighter sentences. If you can get the right lawyer, and/or favorable mitigating circumstances, judges can then justify lesser sentences. The state can tell the public yes, they’re out, but we have this thing called the registry, so you have nothing to worry about. It’s a perfect win-win situation for everybody, including the offender. Right? <sarcasm>
I was a short timer. I’m not a cop. I would still like to see ACSOL be successful just as much as the guy who did 14 1/2 years. I think I’m not alone in that I’d trade more time for less registry. I am however reluctant to participate because y’all might think I got sentenced too “lightly.” Imagine me trying to convince you that I shouldn’t be on the registry or even prosecuted at all. Based on the choice for this headline, it would be like trying to convince FOX news.
I have a hard time believing the facts of this case were as egregious as reported, considering the sentence. Contrary to popular opinion, I would bet the sentence more reflects weak evidence than his LE status. There’s nothing unusual about the press exaggerating or flat out making up facts to create a more outrage.
The demographics of a person in a position of trust misusing it is again solidified here.
All I’ll say about this is another person not on the registry committing a sex offense. How did the Florida registry keep that 15 yr old safe?
Let me get this Straight… (Aka trying to process the crazy ages.) 64 and 15 what on earth can you give a 15 year old. Sure money but that will not last. Next friendship hell no not with a old Fk. What is this guy thinking. Must be wishful thinking or wish he/ she never get old. But when you are young you will lie too yourself and others that you will never get old! Cause you will live forever. Hmmm. No one live forever. But you Don’t try to befriend a young girl at age 30 plus plus plus. That is just creep when you 64 years old. Or older. I understand men and people hate to get old and die but it part of life and we all passing away…. But like I said in the past posts sex offenders our born Not just wake up and say oh gee guess i will molest some kid
